German’s soccer’s biggest rivalry game is a fitting occasion for superheroes and sidekicks.

Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Marco Reus celebrated the first goal in their team’s 3-0 win over Schalke on Saturday by putting on Batman- and Robin-style costumes. The Dortmund duo’s pre-planned celebration in the “Revierderby” (or “Ruhr Derby”) made headlines around the world for its boldness and ingenuity.

Aubameyang scored the opener 78 minutes into the tense contest. The Gabonese striker grabbed a bag from the side of Schalke’s goal, opened it and pulled out a cape and a pair of masks. Aubamayang donned Batman’s mask and cape, while Reus joined him by sporting the Robin mask.

Dortmund added two more goals — Reus scored the third — to inflict a heavy defeat on its local rival.

Aubamayang joked about his eye-catching celebration after the game.

“If you didn’t know who Batman and Robin were before, you do now,” Aubameyang said, according to the BBC.

The win moved Dortmund into 10th place in the Bundesliga (German first division) standings. The German giant still has a chance to qualify for one of next season’s European competitions, despite being rock bottom of the standings at the beginning of February. Reaching Europe after such a disastrous start would be something right out of the superhero comic books of yesteryear.
